Umatilla Tribes gets authority to regulate air quality

The Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation in Oregon have won authority to regulate air quality.

Starting January 1, 2007, the tribe will issue permits for agriculture, forest and residential burns. The tribe has been concerned about the health and environmental impacts of smoke.

The tribe formed a new Office of Air Quality to monitor the air on the reservation. The tribe will comply with stricter standards under the Clean Air Act.
