The Gila River Indian Community of Arizona held its first methamphetamine conference last week.
Delma Morago, 27, and other women in the tribe's drug treatment program shared their experiences with the drug. After she began using the drug, she lost her children and suffered abuse at the hands of her then-boyfriend.
"I started realizing how many times I ended up in the hospital, and I tried to kill myself," Morago said, The East Valley Tribune reported.
The mother of six has since turned her life around. She earned her GED, got a seasonal firefighting job with the Bureau of Indian Affairs and plans to continue her education and help other people overcome their addictions.
The tribe's Behavioral Health Authority uses the Matrix Model to help people break their addictions. The tribe integrates cultural activities into the program.
