Hundreds of Alaska Natives railed against state and federal officials for what they said was a lack of respect for their subsistence rights.
The meeting, organized by the Alaska Federation of Natives, called into question several decisions made by the state and the Interior Department. Speakers said officials are holding meetings in secret and failing to uphold the trust responsibility.
The federal government has a duty to protect Native subsistence rights. But the state constitution calls for equal treatment of Natives and non-Natives, presenting what some officials say is a conflict.
The annual AFN conference kicks off today in Anchorage.
