Nebraska cites improvement in Indian education

Nebraska is making some progress when it comes to the education of Indian students, said the Native American coordinator for the state.

Graduation rates and test scores are rising, said coordinator Carol Rempp. More Natives are joining the teaching field, she said.

But Nebraska isn't seeing enough Indian students who take the PSAT exam or the Advanced Placement exams. Nationally, more Indian students are taking these tests.

About 5,000 Indian students attend public schools in the state. Most come from families that live below the poverty line.

The state receives about $225 in federal funds for each Indian student.
