"As we're trying to process overall results of the National Assessment of Educational Progress tests, there's another kink in the works - performance of Native American students in South Dakota.

# 37 percent of South Dakota Native American fourth-graders scored at or above basic levels for math and reading, while nationally the figure was 48 percent.

# 46 percent of South Dakota Native American eighth-graders scored at or above basic levels for math and reading, while nationally the figure was at 64 percent.

We've known all along that Native American students lagged behind whites in South Dakota and there were strong indications they lagged behind other Native American students around the nation. This study is the first to put hard numbers to that."
