A man who falsely claimed to be Indian was fined $4,000 on Tuesday for health care fraud.
Charles Roger Leo Adams, who went by the name Charlie Smoke, claimed he was Indian in order to receive free Indian Health Service care for himself and his family. He pleaded guilty to the crime in June.
Adams lived in Canada before he was deported because he refused to provide documents about his status. He claimed he was Mohawk and Lakota and entitled to live there based on treaty rights.
He ended up going to the Pine Ridge Reservation, where a tribal judge later determined he was falsifying his identity. He was turned over to face state and federal charges.
