South Dakota tribal court rules man not Indian

A judge from the Oglala Sioux Tribe in South Dakota has ruled that a man claiming Native ancestry is a fraud.

Charlie Smoke was deported from Canada for not having documentation of his status. He said he didn't have papers because he was born on the Akwesasne Mohawk Reserve. He claimed both Mohawk and Lakota ancestry.

After being kicked out of Canada, Smoke went to live on the Pine Ridge Reservation. He ended up in tribal jail on charges of spousal abuse and child neglect..

Last week, Oglala Sioux Judge Lisa Cook found that Smoke was really a non-Indian man named Charles Roger Leo Adams Jr. and that he has used several aliases. The tribe turned him over to South Dakota authorities, and he has been jailed facing a charge of false impersonation.
