An agreement aimed at resolving land and sovereignty issues with the Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe of Massachusetts has been put on hold.
In a 36-18 vote, residents of the town of Aquinnah tabled the deal. Some said it needs more work after hearing complaints from tribal members.
The agreement was drafted after the tribe lost a major sovereignty case. The state's highest court ruled that a special act of Congress opened the tribe to lawsuits.
Still, some tribal leaders said the memorandum of understanding went too far. The tribe plans to meet next month to discuss the issue.
