The Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe and the town of Aquinnah have abandoned a joint land-use agreement and will instead hold an open forum in hopes of improving their relationship.
The tribe and the town have been at odds over the extent of the tribe's sovereignty. The dispute came to a head when the state's highest court ruled that the tribe agreed to abide by local laws and waived its immunity under a special act of Congress.
The proposed agreement sought to address some of the issues. But after a meeting this week, the tribe and the town decided to hold a summit on February 22 to start a new dialogue.
