City builds landfill next to Ponca Tribe cemetery

The Ponca Tribe of Oklahoma is upset that Ponca City is dumping its trash across the road from the tribe's cemetery.

The 10-acre cemetery is held in trust. Some of the tribe's leaders who were forced to move to Oklahoma from Nebraska are buried there.

The city says it has an agreement with the tribe to dump trash in the area. City Manager Jerry Martin said another landfill was located near the cemetery although it has been closed and sealed over.

Plans to expand the new landfill have the tribe and the city at odds. The tribe wants the dump moved but the city says that will be too costly.
