Agreement expected over future of Elhwa village

The Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe of Washington is expected to reach an agreement over the future of a major village whose discovery halted a costly state construction project.

Details are sketchy but the agreement would preserve Tse-whit-zen village, according to The Peninsula Daily News. A cultural center might be built at the site.

The village was used by the tribe as recently as the early 1900s. Its discovery forced the state to stop a $280 million bridge construction project.

The village site was being used as a graving yard for the project. More than 200 ancestors and thousands of artifacts were discovered there.
