Abramoff Scandal
Norquist calls Abramoff report retaliation over Bush

Conservative activist Grover Norquist is accusing Sen. John McCain (R-Arizona) of retaliation over the 2000 Republican presidential primary.

Norquist and other conservatives like Ralph Reed opposed McCain's bid for the nomination. They supported George W. Bush instead.

As chairman of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee, McCain has since drawn Norquist and Reed into the investigation of disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff. The committee's final report, delivered late last month, details Norquist's ties to gaming tribes.

We didnt invent this stuff. Grovers got a hell of a lot more to rebut than what may or may not have been in the committee report," McCain's chief of staff told The Hill newspaper.

But Norquist isn't worried. He said the report won't affect his standing in GOP circles or Republican party in general.
