The Yankton Sioux Tribe has been awarded a $375,000 grant to study pregnancies of Indian women in South Dakota.

The will fund the South Dakota Tribal Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System. The program will examine the experiences of mothers and infants before, after and during pregnancy.

According to the South Dakota Department of Health, the mortality rate for Indian infants is 13.3 per 1,000, nearly twice as high as the rate for whites infants.
