The House Appropriations Committee restored $33 million to the urban Indian health program in the 2007 Interior appropriations bill.
President Bush proposed to eliminate the entire urban health program in the Indian Health Service budget. A cut would force some urban Indian clinics to close and others to cut back services.
The committee restored the funds after tribes, the clinics and individual Indians complained.
