A large family is being removed from the Narragansett Tribe of Rhode Island after reportedly failing to produce evidence of their Narragansett ancestry.
The Champlains were among 119 people who were suspended after their lineage was questioned. About half of those people, from two other families, were able to provide documentation, said Chief Sachem Matthew Thomas.
The Champlains weren't, he said, after being given more than 120 days to do so. Among those being disenrolled is Yvette Champlain, an originally enrollee of the tribe who was sitting on the tribal council when she was suspended.
