The state of Rhode Island is seeking a new trial in the raid of the Narragansett Reservation after a tribal member won a $301,100 verdict.
Adam Jennings was awarded the money after a federal jury found that a state trooper who participated in the raid was guilty of excessive force. Jennings' ankle was broken during the July 14, 2003, incident.
Although other state troopers were cleared, the attorney general says the verdict was unwarranted and that the award is too excessive. The state claims Jennings is entitled to no more than $1,100 for medical costs.
