More than 100 people are facing removal from the Narragansett Tribe of Rhode Island unless they can prove their ancestry back to the 1800s.
Last December, the tribe started disenrollment procedures for people without birth, death or marriage certificates that link them to an 1880 tribal roll. They were given 30 days to respond, although the deadline has been extended to 120 days.
Among those facing removal is Yvette Champlain, who was elected to the tribal council but has been suspended pending resolution of the matter. She accuses the tribe of changing its membership criteria in order to limit who can receive tribal and federal money.
A meeting was scheduled on Saturday to address the controversy. But it was canceled because only one council member showed up.
