The University of Illinois filed a second appeal in hopes of keeping its Chief Illiniwek mascot off the NCAA's list of hostile and abusive Indian mascots.
A staff review found that the Chief was detrimental to Indian people. That means the school can't use the mascot during post-season games and the school can't host post-season tournaments.
The NCAA's mascot policy goes into effect today but the university, in the appeal, says the NCAA doesn't have the power to enforce it.
In related news, the University of Louisiana at Monroe decided to drop its "Indian" mascot rather than face the NCAA's policy.
