"Stryker," a new film about Native street gangs in Winnipeg, Manitoba, is opening in New York City today.
The movie features a mostly Native cast, including some newcomers to the screen. The title role is played by Kyle Henry, a 14-year-old who is recruited into a Native gang after leaving his reserve.
The New York Times calls "Styker" an interesting look at a little known segment of society. But reviewer A.O. Scott says "the film does not offer much in the way of social insight or credible emotion."
The Village Voice offers a similar critiques. "The sense of scalding realism withers on the vine without any convincing line readings," reviewer Michael Atkinson says.
