Author Sherman Alexie, a member of the Spokane Tribe, gave the keynote address at the Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration in Everett, Washington.
Alexie urged attendees to honor King by remembering his faith. He said people shouldn't afraid to be patriotic in a country as diverse as the United States.
"I love my country like I love my family and friends - in spite of all its flaws, and sometimes because of them," he said, The Everett Herald reported.
