Author and filmmaker Sherman Alexie says he clung onto his mullet hairstyle as a way of maintaining his Indian identity.
Alexie, a member of the Spokane Tribe of Washington, was interviewed for a documentary film called "Half of Anything" by Jonathan Tomhave. Although Alexie eventually cut his hair, he waited awhile to do it.
"I wore a mullet to fight against elitists," Alexie says in the film, The University of Washington Daily reported. "The mullet was a last grasp ... at trying to maintain reservation identity."
The film was one of three screened at UW's third annual Native Voices Film Festival.
