Sen. Conrad Burns (R-Montana) won't return about $150,000 in donations from former tribal clients of disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff.
Theres nothing to return, the money has been spent, a spokesperson told the Associated Press.
Burns is the chairman of the Senate Interior Appropriations subcommittee, which oversees funding for the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the Office of Special Trustee, the National Indian Gaming Commission, the Indian Health Service and other Indian programs at the Interior Department. He received more money from Abramoff's tribes than any other member of Congress.
Burns is said to be part of the Department of Justice's investigation of Abramoff. His former chief of staff, who went to work for Abramoff, voluntarily approached federal investigators.
