Editorial: Congrats to Shinnecock Nation but...

"In the Shinnecock Indian Nation's long quest for justice, a federal judge's ruling that it is really a tribe is a welcome moment of affirmation. We share in the Shinnecocks' joy - with some asterisks attached.

To begin with, this is not the last word on the issue. The U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs, which moves in geological time, has not yet granted formal recognition. Without that, the Shinnecocks may not be able to build the casino they want. This page has consistently opposed casino gambling, even for the Shinnecocks, who seem to us to have a strong case that the state did them out of their land unfairly."
