The Assiniboine and Gros Ventre tribes on the Fort Belknap Reservation in Montana packed up and sent two tons of bison meat to hurricane evacuees and relief workers in Texas.

The meat will feed 380 to 400 evacuees of hurricanes Katrina and Rita, plus relief workers, who are staying in Terrell, Texas.

The meat came from the tribal bison herd. A shipping company paid the cost to ship the meat to Texas.

With bison meat going for about $5 a pound, The Great Falls Tribune estimated the donation to be worth $20,000.

In related news, the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians in Californai has donated nearly $700,000 to help tribes affected by Katrina and Rita.
