The Bureau of Indian Affairs will help the Cayuga Nation of New York resolve its leadership dispute.
Factions of the tribe have been battling over a land claim and casino deal. An attempt to resolve the dispute led to the formation of an elected tribal council.
But the BIA said it lacked authority to recognize the "provisional" council, according to a tribal statement. "Mediation by the BIA will bring clarity and cohesiveness to our Nation. It is the most logical way to quickly resolve divisive and long standing leadership issues," said spokesperson Gary Wheeler.
