The Cayuga Nation of New York has asked the Bureau of Indian Affairs to take land into trust.
The tribe is operating Class II gaming, gas stations and convenience stores on the land.
Due to the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision in the Oneida Nation case, the lands aren't considered Indian Country.
Some local officials also say the recent 2nd Circuit Court decision throwing out the Cayuga land claim has an impact. They say the tribe can't acquire trust lands.
An opposition group called the Upstate Citizens for Equality also opposes the trust land applications.
