The Makah Nation of Washington has put the skeleton of the whale killed in 1999 on display at the tribal museum.
Students from Neah Bay High School cleaned and catalogued 600 pounds of bones. The 30-foot skeleton now hangs at the Makah Cultural and Research Center.
The 1999 hunt was the tribe's first in more than 70 years. A subsequent hunt failed to land any whales.
The hunt is now on hold due to further environmental reviews. The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the tribe's treaty rights have been modified by federal law. The tribe is now going through a process to acquire a waiver under the law.
