The third public meeting on the Makah Nation's whale hunt was held in Seattle, Washington, on Tuesday night.
The meetings are being held to consider the tribe's request to hunt whale under the Marine Mammals Protection Act. The tribe has applied for a waiver, as required by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.
About 100 to 150 people attended last night's meeting, according to news reports. Some spoke out against the hunt but the tribe's vice chairman said he was confident the tribe would obtain the waiver.
A total of three meetings were held in Washington. A fourth meeting, on Tuesday, October 18, in Silver Spring, Maryland, has recently been scheduled. Native Americans in the Washington, D.C., are being encouraged to attend [PDF: Federal Register Notice].
