A second meeting on the Makah Nation's whale hunt was held on the tribe's reservation in Washington on Thursday.
Tribal members and anti-whaling activists attended the meeting, The Peninsula Daily News reported. The paper said the meeting was pleasant except for one confrontation in which an activist showed a picture of the whale the tribe killed in 1999 to Makah vice chairman Dave Sones.
At another point, a Native woman and an activist traded charges of racism, the paper said. But this discussion was stopped by the meeting moderator.
The meetings are being held as part of the tribe's request for a waiver under the Marine Mammals Protection Act. Although the tribe has a treaty-guaranteed right to hunt whales, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, in the first ruling of its kind, said the law limited the tribe's rights.
