Parts of a proposed highway in Arizona run through a sacred mountain, The Arizona Republic reports.
The Arizona Department of Transportation is seeking to build a highway in the Phoenix area. The state is hoping to use land owned by members of the Gila River Indian Community.
Some landowners are opposed to the project. But they learned that the state might destroy a sacred mountain where important cultural sites, and possibly gravesites, are located.
The state says it won't have to cut into the mountain if the highway runs through the reservation. That has the landowners rethinking their stance, a tribal member said.
