President Bush is preparing to nominate at least 30 more people to fill district court and appeals court vacancies, The Washington Post reports.
The White House is eager to put Democrats to the test on the recent compromise on judicial nominees, Republicans told the paper. Democrats said they would not use filibusters except in "extraordinary circumstances."
Meanwhile, Republicans are still deciding whether to call a floor vote on Bill Myers for a spot on the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. Myers was not included in the compromise. He is opposed by tribes and environmental groups.
"Mr. Myers wants to destroy the Quechan people, by destroying our history, our past, our future. People that he has never met," Alan Jackson, the president of the Quechan Nation, told The Yuma Sun. As the Interior Department's top lawyer, Myers rescinded a legal opinion to allow a gold mine on the tribe's most important site.
