The Haida Nation of British Columbia has set up blockades around Queen Charlotte Islands to protest the provincial government's failure to consult over a $1.2 billion land and logging deal.
The blockades have halted logging on the islands and the protest is supported by non-Native residents, said a local mayor who urged the province to work with the Haidas.
The tribe is protesting the B.C. government's sale of land and logging rights on the islands, which is traditional Haida territory.
Canada's Supreme Court has ruled that First Nations must be consulted on decisions affecting aboriginal lands.
