Can. Supreme Court hearing trust relationship case

Canada's Supreme Court is hearing a landmark case on the trust relationship with First Nations in British Columbia.. Two years ago, the British Columbia Court of Appeal ruled that the government has a fiduciary obligation to inform First Nations of actions affecting traditional territories. But in an unprecedented step, the court ruled that a private company doing business on Crown forest land has the same duty. The government and Weyerhaeuser, a timber company, appealed the decision. The Haida Nation, the Taku River Tlingit First Nation and the First Nations Summit are hoping the Supreme Court will uphold the ruling. A decision could take months to reach. Get the Story:
