The nuclear industry doesn't support a Utah tribe's temporary waste facility, a top lobbyist said.
Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) Vice President John Kane said the industry is focused on Yucca Mountain in Nevada, the federal government's permanent repository. The facility has been given approval by Congress and President Bush.
The chairman of the Skull Valley Goshute Tribe signed an agreement to host up to 40,000 tons of nuclear waste on the reservation. The deal is supposed to last 20 years.
Yucca Mountain, located on Western Shoshone treaty land, is several years away from opening. Opponents in Nevada still hope to block it somehow.
