The incoming and outgoing presidents of the Oglala Sioux Tribe said the defeat of Sen. Tom Daschle (D-South Dakota) on Election Day was a loss to tribe.

Newly elected president Cecilia Fire Thunder said Daschle was a friend to the tribe. But she said she will work with Republican John Thune on a legislative agenda and urged him to earn the respect of the tribe.

Outgoing president John Yellowbird Steele said Daschle's defeat was a "big loss" for the tribe and the state. "We're going to miss his power, his position and his influence," he told The Rapid City Journal.
