The state of South Dakota will likely appeal a court ruling holding that legislative districts violated the rights of Indian voters.
State attorney general Larry Long, who has opposed tribes on jurisdiction, land-into-trust and sovereignty, said a decision will be made next week. He said state lawyer are going over the ruling.
On Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Karen Schreier held that the state illegally packed voters on the Pine Ridge and Rosebud reservations into one district. Rather than spreading their voting power into two districts, she said the state diluted Indian voting rights.
