Members of the Skull Valley Goshute Tribe of Utah were joined by environmentalists to oppose a proposed nuclear waste dump on the reservation.
The small tribe, which has less than 150 members, is divided over the proposal. Activists led by Margene Bullcreek, founder of the Guadadeh Devia Awareness, said it would destroy the environment and pose health and safety risks.
Chairman Leon Bear, who is under federal indictment for allegedly stealing from the tribe, signed a lease with Private Fuel Storage to store up to 40,000 tons of nuclear waste on the reservation. The deal requires federal approval.
