The family of Anna Mae Pictou Aquash has put the American Indian Movement activist's funeral on hold in response to a legal challenge from one of her accused murderers.
Aquash was due to be reburied Indian Brook First Nation in Nova Scotia. But lawyers for John Graham, one of the suspects in her murder, obtained a temporary restraining order in hopes of conducting a third autopsy on her body.
Graham claims the autopsy is needed to investigate whether Aquash was raped before she was killed in December 1975 on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. But a scientist contacted by the family says there will not be any DNA evidence remaining.
