Citing, "gross irregularities" the Supreme Court of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina ordered new elections for two tribal districts and removed all five members of the tribe's election board.
The elections for Districts 12 and 13 had been the subject of dispute. The elections board scheduled new elections for both districts but the court said only it had the authority to do so.
Emma Locklear, chairwoman of the elections board, said the decision, issued on Saturday, was illegal. She said the court doesn't have to the power to remove the board.
