A vote on a new Class III gaming compact for the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians could come by next May, a top North Carolina lawmaker said.
The tribe has been in talks with Gov. Beverly Purdue (D) and lawmakers about adding live dealers at the Harrah's Cherokee
Casino. Depending on the terms of the deal, up to 600 new jobs could be created.
A vote is likely before a special session of the Legislature in May 2012, House Speaker Thom Tillis (R) said.
