Seven companies are bidding to conduct a gaming study commissioned by the state of Rhode Island.
The state wants to know about the gaming market in New England. Tribal and commercial casinos are possible in Massachusetts and New York, which could pose a threat to non-Indian facilities in Rhode Island.
The state also wants to know how much a casino is worth to the Narragansett Tribe. Gov. Lincoln Chafee (I) has said any expansion of gaming should address the tribe's issues.
Chafee's legislative counsel said the study will determine how much the tribe would be giving up if it wasn't able to build a casino.
