Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee (I) wants to know how much a casino is worth to the Narragansett Tribe.
Chafee issued a request-for-proposals for a gaming study. Respondents are asked to "develop an estimate of the present and future value to a tribe" of a casino, The Providence Journal reported.
"What we heard the governor say is that [he] would like to involve the tribe in any expansion of gaming," Claire Richards, an attorney for the governor, told the paper.
A 1997 amendment to the Indian
Gaming Regulatory Act bars the tribe from conducting gaming under the law.
The tribe has sought voter approval for a commercial casino but has been rejected at the polls.
