An off-reservation casino operated by a rival tribe will have a "devastating impact" on the Little Traverse Bay Bands of
Odawa Indians, Chairman Ken Harrington said.
Harrington's tribe has sued the Bay Mills Indian Community in hopes of shutting down the off-reservation casino in Vanderbilt. That's about 37 miles from the Odawa Casino Resort.
"We are tribal governments, not corporations. Reservation shopping threatens the integrity of Indian gaming here in Michigan and around the country," Harrington told Indian Country Today.
Harrington said an opinion
issued by the National Indian Gaming
Commission and a letter
from the Interior Department confirm that the Vanderbilt casino does not qualify for gaming under the Indian
Gaming Regulatory Act.
