County puts end to Catawba Nation high stakes bingo hall

The Catawba Nation of South Carolina won't be opening a high-stakes bingo hall in Richland County.

The tribe's proposal to take over an existing bingo hall was met with opposition at a public meeting on Monday. That prompted a county council member to remove the issue from Tuesday's agenda.

"It's somewhat disappointing but, I guess I would say, from a political point of view not surprising," Chief Donald Rodgers told The State.

The tribe is barred from gaming under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act but can operate two bingo halls under state law. One of the bingo halls can be located off the reservation but the tribe has to gain local and state approval.
