The Catawba Nation of South Carolina ran into opposition to its plans to take over a bingo hall.
The tribe wants to turn Carolina Gold Bingo into a high-stakes facility. The tribe would operate it under state law, as required by its land claim settlement act.
"We are here to be a good neighbor," Chief Donald Rodgers said at a public meeting last night, The State reported. "We will operate a very nice facility."
Many residents, however, spoke out against the proposal at the meeting. Some local officials also said they will vote against it if it comes to a vote tonight.
The tribe is barred from gaming under the Indian
Gaming Regulatory Act.
