Piestewa Peak is a name "that should make all Arizonans proud," The Arizona Republic says in an editorial today.

But some people are using the situation to throw mud, the paper laments. Even though the paper says an aide to Gov. Janet Napolitano (D), without her approval, was wrong to pressure the employer a state board appointee to vote for the name change, others should not let politics dishonor Lori Piestewa, the Hopi woman killed in action in Iraq.

"This truth should ring clearly above politics," the paper says. "It should not be sullied or silenced."

The Arizona Daily Star also agrees that the aide's tactics were uncalled for. "Mario Diaz, Napolitano's deputy chief of staff, went way overboard in pushing for the name change," the paper says in an editorial, effectively calling for Napolitano to fire him.
