Bills seek recognition of Wash. tribes

FRIDAY, JANUARY 10, 2003 Members of Washington's Congressional delegation are preparing to introduce bills to recognize two tribes that were denied federal status by the Bush administration. Rep. Jim McDermott (D) is finalizing a bill for the Duwamish Tribe. Former Assistant Secretary Neal McCaleb denied the tribe preliminary status in September 2001. Rep. Brian Baird (D) is working on a measure for the Chinook Nation. McCaleb issued a final decision against the tribe in July 2003. Get the Story:
