Tribal sovereignty case accepted
The Supreme Court broke a long-running silence on Indian law this week by agreeing to take on a case involving state jurisdiction over tribal governments.

The Court in 2001 decided a similar case involving state power over an individual Indian. The Bishop Paiute Tribe of California contends that the ruling doesn't apply to its casino or government operation.

Also this week, the Court decided not to revisit state taxation of Indians. The justices without comment turned down an appeal from Montana involving an Indian-owned business.

Conn. tribe denied federal recognition
The Schaghticoke Tribal Nation of Connecticut finally got an answer on its federal status this week. Assistant Secretary Neal McCaleb said no to the tribe's recognition.

The long-awaited decision is only preliminary. Schaghticoke Chief Richard Velky said the tribe will focus on filling in the gaps identified by Bureau of Indian Affairs researchers in anticipation of a final decision in September 2003.
