FRIDAY, DECEMBER 6, 2002

Welcome to In The Hoop, Indianz.Com's occasional column about assorted Indian issues.

In The Hoop: The Scorecard
Is it Friday already? That means it's time for the weekly list of the movers and shakers in Indian Country and beyond.

The Winners
Aurene Martin - You are the the Bush administration's rising star! You may not have much management experience but the reorganization will give you plenty. Good luck.

Paul O'Neill - Whether you were asked to leave or did it on your own, resigning from the Bush Cabinet is a smart move. Now if only another member would follow your lead. (Chuckle, chuckle.)

Seminole Tribe - The federal court trial over alleged embezzlement of tribal funds should be on CourtTV. It's that good.

Tex Hall - Were you disinvited to the "Pick the Chief" session at the BIA too? We'll take your leadership over the others any day.

The Losers
Aurene Martin - Welcome to the BIA! It's a wonderful world of backstabbing, coverups, and lies. And that's just what happens when they sort the mail.

ICT - You are so yesterday's Indianz.Com. You haven't bit this hard in ages.

Dan DuBray - You can run but you can't hide. Al Kamen is watching!

OAIT / BAR / OIEP - Neal says it's an "Indian Trust Management Plan." It looks more like a demotion disguised as progress.

In The Middle
Aurene Martin - As the new most powerful Indian woman in federal government today, you have stepped into testy waters. Ada Deer, Hilda Manuel, Sharon Blackwell, anybody?

Kevin Gover - We can't decide if your decision to leave the formal practice of law is a good thing or a bad thing.

Edward Manuel - You give new meaning to the Red Light Special. But will you or won't you resign? We say pull out the Iron Fist and keep fighting.

White Mountain Apache / Navajo Nation - The legal experts are favoring the Apaches over the Navajos. We're going to go out on a limb and predict the opposite outcome.
