Dark Winds, a television series set on the Navajo Nation, is coming back for a third and expanded season.

At the start of National Native American Heritage Month, AMC Networks released a trailer for the forthcoming season. “Some truths are best left buried,” the November 1 tease reads.

Dark Winds stars Zahn McClarnon (Lakota) and Kiowa Gordon (Hualapai) as Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee, respectively, who are tribal police officers working on the Navajo Nation in the 1970s. The two characters are based on a well-known series of novels authored by the late Tony Hillerman, who was non-Native.

Season three of Dark Winds, which has expanded to eight episodes, picks up on Leaphorn’s and Chee’s investigation into the disappearance of two boys on the reservation. The show is also following a third officer — Jessica Matten (Métis and Cree) as Bernadette Manuelito — who is working along the United States border for the federal government after leaving the tribal police department.

Rounding out the primary cast is Deanna Allison (Navajo from the Colorado River Indian Tribes) as Emma Leaphorn, the wife of Joe Leaphorn. All four lead stars are Native American and, in the case of Matten, First Nations from Canada.

The creator of Dark Winds is Graham Roland (Chickasaw), who is also an executive producer — along with McClarnon. Several episodes have been directed by Chris Eyre (Cheyenne-Arapaho), another executive producer.

Season three of Dark Winds premieres March 9, 2025. The first two seasons can be streamed on AMC+ or Netflix.
